X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>This debut novel by an Arab-American voice
\,takes us inside the lives of conservative Arab women living in America.
In Brooklyn\, eighteen-year-old Deya is starting to meet with suitors. Tho
ugh she doesn&rsquo\;t want to get married\, her grandparents give her no
choice. History is repeating itself: Deya&rsquo\;s mother\, Isra\, also ha
d no choice when she left Palestine as a teenager to marry Adam. Though De
ya was raised to believe her parents died in a car accident\, a secret not
e from a mysterious\, yet familiar-looking woman makes Deya question every
thing she was told about her past. As the narrative alternates between the
lives of Deya and Isra\, she begins to understand the dark\, complex secr
ets behind her community.</p>\n<p>The Diversity Book Club is hosted monthl
y by AAUW Alexandria / Women Building Cross-Cultural Friendships (WBCCF) a
nd co-sponsored by the Alexandria Burke Branch Library.</p>\n<p>WBCCF's go
al is to give women the opportunity in a diverse and inclusive group to en
rich their own lives through these relationships and help amplify the voic
es of all women in our community. WBCCF&nbsp\;believes that the opportunit
y to come together to explore issues of race\, religion\, ethnicity\, etc.
through well-chosen books will not only further our individual learning b
ut also create a setting in which we might ultimately decide on a communit
y undertaking with wider implications.</p>\n<p>The Diversity Book Club mee
ts on the Second Monday of each month at 7:00 PM.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>A zoom ac
count is not required to join\, but a microphone is! Most mobile devices h
ave microphones installed. If you're using a desk top\, most webcams also
have microphones built in.</p>\n<p>If you have any questions about the pro
gram or would like to register\, please contact Bonnie Hershberg at hersh3
