 demic has already had a transformative effect on higher education in the U
 nited States\, with faculty layoffs\, massive budget cuts\, college closin
 gs\, and the rapid conversion of courses to remote learning. This acute cr
 isis\, however\, exposes the problems that have marked higher education fo
 r several decades now: imposed austerity\, privatization\, and the corpora
 tization of the university\, to name a few of the many issues. This presen
 tation looks at the state of public higher education in the United States 
 in light of the pandemic and suggests that this is the time to move away f
 rom the policies and administrative decisions that have led us here and in
 stead reinvigorate the public university as a public good.</p>\n<p>Brian C
 onnolly is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of History at t
 he University of South Florida. He is the author of <em>Domestic Intimacie
 s: Incest and the Liberal Subject in Nineteenth-Century America</em> (2014
 ) as well as numerous articles and essays in venues ranging<br />from Femi
 nist Theory to the Los Angeles Review of Books. He is the editor of <em>Hi
