For more than 100 years diners have played an im portant role in New Jersey&rsquo\;s history as gathering places for a comm unity. Diner experiences&mdash\;good food\, slice-of-life encounters with friends and strangers\, and the memories they inspire&mdash\;reflect our s tate&rsquo\;s spirit\, culture and mythology.
\nThe book (190 pages and over 80 photos\, including a 16-page color insert) documents stories g athered throughout the &ldquo\;Diner Capital of the World." These are hear tfelt remembrances that have shaped lives\, families\, careers\, businesse s\, and communities&mdash\;the &ldquo\;untold&rdquo\; stories of New Jerse y&rsquo\;s history. Many tales are snapshots of the immigrant experience&m dash\;people who have traveled to New Jersey from far-away countries to ga in a foothold as American citizens.
\nChapters in the book include m emories of late-night eats during Wildwood&rsquo\;s wild rock-and-roll day s of the 1950s\; an entrepreneur who traveled eight-thousand miles from In dia and opened a diner in the Pine Barrens\; first-person remembrances fro m Newark&rsquo\;s famous\, long-gone Weequahic Diner\; and a frantic\, imp romptu midnight wedding ceremony held in an Elizabeth lunch wagon in 1906.
\nThis is Gabriele&rsquo\;s fourth book on New Jersey history\, and second book about the Garden State&rsquo\;s diner business\, all publishe d by Arcadia Publishing/The History Press (website: www.arcadiapublishing. com/The-History-Press). \nA lifelong Garden State resident\, Gabriele is a 1975 graduate of Montclair State University and h as worked as a journalist\, freelance writer and author for more than fort y years. He&rsquo\;s a member of the board of trustees for the annual New Jersey Folk Festival at Rutgers University\, a member of the executive boa rd for the Nutley Historical Society\, the Theater League of Clifton\, and serves on the advisory board of the Clifton Arts Center.
