2021 marks hundred years since the Tulsa race massacr e.
\nThe \;Tulsa race massacre \;(also called the \;Tuls a race riot\, the \;Greenwood Massacre\, the \;Black Wall Street M assacre\, the \;Tulsa pogrom\, or the \;Tulsa Massacre) took place on May 31 and June 1\, 1921\, when mobs of white residents\, many of them given weapons by city officials\, attacked black residents and businesses of the \;Greenwood \;District in \;Tulsa\, \;Oklahoma.
\nIt has been called "the single worst incident of \;racial violen ce in American history. The attack\, carried out on the ground and from pr ivate aircraft\, destroyed more than 35 square blocks of the district&mdas h\;at that time the wealthiest black community in the United States\, know n as "Black Wall Street".
\nRandy Krehbiel will discuss the forces t hat led to the burning of one of the United State's most prosperous and in dependent African American communities of the early 20th century.
\nRandy Krehbiel is an Oklahoma native and a graduate of Oklahoma State Univ ersity. He arrived at the Tulsa World in 1979 as a sports writer\, and has remained there ever since. He has reported on a wide range of topics\, in cluding college football\, boxing\, politics and the 1995 Oklahoma City Bo mbing. In 1999 he was assigned to coverage of the Tulsa Race Riot\, a pane l established by the Oklahoma Legislature to investigate the events of May 31-June 1\, 1921\, and theiraftermath. Thus began the two decades of rese arch and reporting that became the basis of "Tulsa 1921: Reporting a Massa cre"\, which was published in September 2019 and was named Oklahoma Depart ment of Libraries&rsquo\; Nonfiction Book of the Year and the Oklahoma His torical Society&rsquo\;s Book of the Year.
\nRandy lives in Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, where he continues to report on issues related to race and the Race Massacre as well as state and national politics and government. He is a member of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame.
