For girls and young wom en\, they help fulfill the dream of a college degree &mdash\;and beyond. F or women\, they create and implement strategies of survival to combat the isms (racism\, sexism\, classism\, colorism) and phobias (homophobia\, tra nsphobia\, Islamophobia\, xenophobia) which threaten to push them out of t heir doctoral programs and the academy. SisterMentors \;help to advanc e the larger movement for equity and justice for people of color and other marginalized communities. During the past 20 plus years\, they have helpe d over 95 women of color to earn higher education degrees including Ph.Ds. in Math\, Science and Economics. Their overarching goal is to help women and girls of color live in freedom and dignity and to pass this on to the next generation.

\nDr. Shireen Lewis is the Executive Director of EduSeed and Fo under of EduSeed&rsquo\;s SisterMentors program. She has devoted over 20 y ears to mentoring and coaching women and girls. Dr. Lewis has received man y awards for her work\, including honorary degrees from Rutgers University and Hollins University\, a Women Making a Powerful Difference Award from Ebony magazine and Pine Sol\, and the Honorable Annice M. Wagner Pioneer A ward from the Bar Association of the District of Columbia. Dr. Lewis&rsquo \; scholarship and teaching are in Francophone West African and Caribbean literature. Her book titled\, Race\, Culture and Identity: Francophone Wes t African and Caribbean Literature and Theory from Né\;gritude to Cr é\;olité\; (Lexington Books\, 2006)\, is the first comprehensi ve study of the relationship between Né\;gritude\, Antillanité \; and Cré\;olité\;. Dr. Lewis has taught at several universit ies\, including as Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia. Dr. L ewis earned her Ph.D. in French Literature from Duke University and her J. D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. \; Dr. Lewis is a ce rtified yoga teacher and a certified stress management specialist. She has a daily practice of yoga and meditation\, and is part of the sangha at Sa tchidananda Ashram&ndash\;Yogaville in Buckingham\, Virginia. \;
