When the Close sisters were very young\, their parents joined a cult called the MRA\, or Moral Rearmament. The fami ly was suddenly uprooted to a cult school in Switzerland and\, ultimately\ , to the Belgian Congo where their father became a surgeon in the war-rava ged republic\, and ultimately the personal physician to President Mobutu. Shortly after the girls returned to the US for boarding school\, Jessie fi rst started to exhibit symptoms of severe bipolar disorder (she would late r learn that this ran in the family\, a well-kept secret). Jessie embarked on a series of destructive marriages as the condition worsened. Glenn was always by her side throughout. Jessie's mental illness was passed on to h er son\, Calen. It wasn't until Calen entered McLean's psychiatric hospita l that Jessie herself was diagnosed. Fifteen years and twelve years of sob riety later\, Jessie is a stable and productive member of society. Glenn c ontinues to be the major support in Jessie's life. \; Check out the book here.
\nThe Diversity Book Club is hosted monthly by AAUW Alexandria / Women Buil ding Cross-Cultural Friendships (WBCCF) and co-sponsored by the Alexandria Burke Branch Library.
\nWBCCF's goal is to give women the opportuni ty in a diverse and inclusive group to enrich their own lives through thes e relationships and help amplify the voices of all women in our community. WBCCF \;believes that the opportunity to come together to explore iss ues of race\, religion\, ethnicity\, etc. through well-chosen books will n ot only further our individual learning but also create a setting in which we might ultimately decide on a community undertaking with wider implicat ions.
