In the late nineteenth century\, Henry Oss awa Tanner became the first black artist to achieve fame in Europe. Drawin g on training he received at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, T anner's early work represented African Americans with dignity and respect. In a speech at the "Congress on Africa" at Chicago's World's Columbian Ex position\, he encouraged other artists to do the same and oppose the predo minant racial stereotypes of his era. Ultimately Tanner turned toward reli gious themes and brought a fresh perspective to time-honored Biblical subj ects. In this presentation\, art historian Jeff Mishur discusses Tanner's artistic journey and places his work within an art historical context.
