On April 25\, 1898 the United States decla red war on Spain following the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana harbor. The short war ended 109 day later on December 10\,1898 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The war marked a turning point in history as this fo ur month conflagration transformed the United States from a developing nat ion into a global power. At the conclusion the United States had acquired the Philippines\, Guam\, and Puerto Rico\, that would lead the United Stat es into the Philippine Insurrection the following year.
