ssistant Professor of Psychology and Counseling\; Director of Undergraduat
e Psychology</p>\n<p>Dr. Michael Martynowicz\, Associate Professor of Psyc
hology and Counseling\; Field Director of Psychology and Counseling\; Dire
ctor of MS in Psychology Program\, University of Saint Francis-Fort Wayne.
</p>\n<hr />\n<p>College students have always dealt with stress and mental
health issues\, but incidence rates have&nbsp\;increased dramatically ove
r the past decade. The majority of college students report feeling anxious
&nbsp\;and overwhelmed by their studies\, one in four meets the diagnostic
criteria for a psychological&nbsp\;disorder\, and one-third report having
considered suicide. This alarming trend has also recently been observed i
n the younger adolescent population. Unfortunately\, many of these individ
uals do not seek help and attempt to deal with the struggles on their own.
Often coupled with these concerns is&nbsp\;a history of adverse childhood
  experiences (e.g.\, neglect\, abuse\, dysfunctional family structure).&nb
sp\;Research indicates that an increasing number of students deal with adv
ersity as children\, and there can be significant long-term consequences.<
/p>\n<p>Poor mental health and wellness as well as adverse childhood exper
iences are strongly related to student achievement and success. With the r
ise in the prevalence of mental health and stress-related academic challen
ges among today&rsquo\;s youth population\, it is imperative that communit
ies&nbsp\;recognize the need to better understand the psychosocial and beh
avioral factors that impact our kids. This presentation highlights the sta
tistics and research on these current student issues and provides informat
ion regarding avenues for prevention\, intervention\, and local resources.
