X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Slavery in the Washington area was differe
nt. It began the same - in the late 1600s - but it soon changed. By the ti
me of the Civil War\, Washington D.C. still had slaves\, but they lived am
ong a population of free African Americans. Author James H. Johnston will
discuss this\, and more perspectives on slavery that emerge from his two b
ooks\, 'The Recollections of Margaret Loughborough\,' about a daughter of
the Old Dominion of Virginia\, and 'From Slave Ship to Harvard\,' which fo
llows six generations of an African American family in Maryland.</p>\n<p><
