  horse trainers of his day. Tom Bass was born into slavery on the Bass Pla
 ntation south of Columbia\, where he learned the horse trade from his gran
 dfather. After moving to Mexico\, Missouri\, Tom gained a reputation as a 
 gentle but effective trainer of even the most difficult horses. By the 189
