Join us as we celebrate the spirit of Worl d Social Justice Day with Dr. Eve L. Ewing\, award-winning author and assi stant professor at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Admi nistration\, as she shares perspectives on her work and the world in 2021. \;
\nDr. Ewing is a sociologist of education whose research foc uses on racism\, social inequality\, and urban policy\, and the impact of these forces on American public schools and the lives of young people.
\nDr. Eve L. Ewing will be joined in conversation with WBEZ's award-winning journalist Natalie Moore.
\nDr. Eve L Ewing and Natali e Moore have been awarded the prestigious United States Artists&rsquo\; US A Fellowship for 2021 which recognizes the most compelling artists working and living in the United States. \; \;
\nDr. Ewing&rsquo\;s most recent work\, 1919\, is a unique collection of poems explor ing the story of the Chicago Race Riots of 1919\, an event largely neglect ed in modern discourse. \; Her first book of poems\, Electric Arch es\, is an imaginative exploration of black girlhood and womanhood th rough poetry\, visual art\, and narrative prose\, and was awarded the 2018 American Library Association Alex Award\, among others. \; She is als o the author of the 2018 nonfiction work\, Ghosts in the Schoolyard: R acism and School Closings on Chicago&rsquo\;s South Side\, w hich examines the 2013 wave of targeted school closing in Chicago&rsquo\;s predominately low-income and African-American south side neighborhoods\, resulting in severe educational inequity and a disproportionate lack of re sources. \; She is currently continuing to write the Champions series for Marvel Comics. \; \;
\nNatalie Moore covers seg regation and inequality for Chicago&rsquo\;s WBEZ. Her enterprise reporting has tackled race\, housing\, economic development\, food injust ice\, and violence. She is the author of The South Side: A Portrait of Chicago and American Segregation\, winner of the 2016 Chicago Review of Books award for nonfiction and a BuzzFeed best nonfiction book of 2016 . She is also co-author of The Almighty Black P Stone Nation: The Rise \, Fall\, and Resurgence of an American Gang\, and Deconstructing Tyrone: A New Look at Black Masculinity in the Hip-Hop Generatio n. \;
