\nDogs were given as gifts\, and kept as pets\, guardians\, and for hunting. Dogs were apprecia ted by the Greeks for their faith and love. Homer's "Odyssey" tells the st ory of Odysseus\, who raised a dog called Argos\, and who was the only one that recognized him when he returned home after his travels\, disguised t o conceal his appearance. \;
\nFrom Cerberus\, of ancient Greek mythology\, to \;the war dogs\, pets\, and hunting dogs of Rome\, look at examples in Classical art to learn how man&rsquo\;s best friend preser ved the life\, limb\, and property of his master.
\nPresenter\, Mike Norris got his BA in classics from the University of California at San Di ego and his MA in classics and Ph.D. in art history at the University of C alifornia at Santa Barbara. He spent twenty years at the Cloisters Museum and the Metropolitan Museum \;of Art in New York and has lectured \;on trips all over the world. \;He lives in Teaneck\, New Jersey.
