 eenth\, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States
 \, is now an official&nbsp\;holiday in New Jersey. Governor Phil Murphy si
 gned a bill on September 10\, 2020 that stated that New Jersey will celebr
 ate the day\, every year on the third Friday in June.</strong></p>\n<p>Thi
 s program will explore the months leading up to June 19\, 1865\, during wh
 ich enslaved populations throughout the state of Texas waited to receive n
 ews of their legal status&nbsp\;from Union Army officials. This program wi
 ll also consider the meanings of this waiting time for African American pe
 ople in the months and years after they received their freedom. Finally\, 
 Professor Hunter will examine African American Juneteenth commemoration pr
 actices from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries.</p>\n<p>At th
