X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Gonzaga's Dr. Maucione argues literary tex
ts that imagine anti- or post-capitalist spaces are important not only in
preparing readers to enter them\, but in making them possible. She juxtapo
 ses near-future-set novels\, Mohsin Hamid&rsquo\;s <em>Exit West</em> and
Louise Erdrich&rsquo\;s <em>The Future Home of the Living God</em>\, in or
der to explore the sociopolitical significance of the anti-capitalist futu
res they manifest. No need to read the books ahead of time!</p>\n<p>Erdric
h is an Indigenous woman writer\, whose novel focuses on women as targets
of exploitation and commoditization as well as the sources of hope for a b
etter future\, while Hamid&rsquo\;s novel is feminist in that it imagines
a female protagonist who is better equipped to embrace change and the futu
re itself because as a woman in a patriarchal society\, she is not attache
d to the status quo in the ways that her male counterpart is.</p>\n<p>Jess
 ica Maucione\, Ph.D.\, is&nbsp\;Professor of English and Women's &amp\; Ge
nder Studies and Powers Chair of the Humanities at Gonzaga University.</p>
