\nTan ya Boteju is an English teacher and writer living on unceded territories o f the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations (Vancouver\, Canada). She completed her English and Education degrees at the University of British Columbia\, then spent time in New York attaining her Master of Arts through Columbia University&rsquo\;s Teachers College. Most recently \, Tanya received a Creative Writing Certificate through Simon Fraser Univ ersity&rsquo\;s Writer&rsquo\;s Studio. Her writing life has mostly consis ted of teaching writing for the past eighteen years in Vancouver\, where s he has continually been inspired by the brilliant young people in her mids t.
\nHer novel\, \;Kings\, Queens\, and In-Betweens \;(2019)\, was named an \; Indie Top 10 Pick of the Summer \;by the American Booksellers Asso ciation\, \;a starred review&nb sp\;on Shelf Awareness\, a Barnes &\; Noble \;best YA book of May\, a \;Best Teen Book of 20 19 \;by Indigo\, and a \;Rainbow List \;se lection for 2020. Her short story &ldquo\;Floating&rdquo\; appears in the anthology \;Out Now \;(Inkyard Press\, 202 0). Boteju&rsquo\;s \;next YA novel\, \;Bruised\, is due out in March 2021 and has been selected as a Gold Standard Book by the Junior Library Guild.

\nTo Daya Wijesingh e\, a bruise is a mixture of comfort and control. Since her parents died i n an accident she survived\, bruises have become a way to keep her pain on the surface of her skin so she doesn&rsquo\;t need to deal with the ache deep in her heart.
\nSo when chance and circumstances bring her to a roller derby bout\, Daya is hooked. Yes\, the rules are confusing and the sport seems to require the kind of teamwork and human interaction Daya ge nerally avoids. But the opportunities to bruise are countless\, and Daya r ealizes that if she&rsquo\;s going to keep her emotional pain at bay\, she &rsquo\;ll need all the opportunities she can get.
\nThe deeper Daya immerses herself into the world of roller derby\, though\, the more she r ealizes it&rsquo\;s not the simple physical pain-fest she was hoping for. Her rough-and-tumble teammates and their fans push her limits in ways she never imagined\, bringing Daya to big truths about love\, loss\, strength\ , and healing.
