X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>In Fall of 2020\, images of Firstenberg's
<em>In America: How could this happen&hellip\;&nbsp\;</em>art installation
graced over six hundred news articles on six continents\, making visible
the COVID-19 pandemic&rsquo\;s cost in American lives. Her art created a n
ational space for mourning.</p>\n<p>In September 2021\, Firstenberg recrea
ted this art installation\, newly named <em>In America: Remember</em>\, on
the National Mall.&nbsp\; For seventeen days\, over 650\,000 white flags
fluttered near the Washington Monument. To ensure access for all\, Firsten
berg partnered with Esri\, Inc\, the global leader in geographic informati
on systems\, to present the art concurrently in the digital sphere.</p>\n<
p>Firstenberg believes art has incredible power to educate\, inspire\, and
change the lens through which viewers understand social issues. Interview
s\, research\, and reading ground her work on topics that include gun viol
 ence\, Native Americans\, homelessness\, and political partisanship.&nbsp\
; The underlying theme is upholding individual dignity\, a value honed thr
ough her twenty-five years of hospice volunteering.</p>\n<p>In this Zoom p
resentation\, Firstenberg will talk with us about why and how she created
the In America art installations. Firstenberg believes in times like ours\
, when words fall on unlistening ears\, art is not an elective\, but an im
perative. Join us to view photos of her art and learn how she became an ar
tist and is inspired.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Co-hosted with Bethesda Metro Area
Village. BMAV is a volunteer organization providing services and community
support to allow people to remain in their homes as they age.</p>\n<p></p
