Of the approximately 3\,000 different phot ographers who were active in New Jersey before 1900\, a number lived or wo rked in Somerset County. In a slide lecture\, Monmouth County archivist Ga ry D. Saretzky will profile these pioneers and discuss them within the lar ger context of New Jersey photography in the nineteenth century. As seen i n the slides\, these photographers documented the people and places of the ir times but\, in addition\, their individual histories provide insight in to social conditions of their era. Among the photographers to be discussed are William A. Apgar (active 1876-1892)\, Columbus S. Gernert (active 189 8-1913)\, and Edward T. Kelley (active 1868-1885)\, all three based in Som erville.
