X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:
For young musicians\, making music without
a score can be a daunting task. However\, students of all ages can gain e
ntry into the world of improvised music through free improvisation with a
group. This class will introduce participants to strategies for creating o
riginal music and gaining a deeper understanding of how to listen and resp
ond to others. Participants will also walk away with a recording of their
performances.
\n

Matt Magerkurth is a composer and cellist dedi
cated to interacting with the sense of place in recorded music and live pe
rformance. In his work\, he acknowledges his family roots in rural Kansas
and his involvement with folk music by creating slowly developing textures
as vehicles for improvisation. This process includes an unconventional ap
proach to the cello by using an instrument like a synthesizer or a percuss
ion instrument\, using spectral techniques to highlight overtones or chopp
ing methods descended from bluegrass. Much of his work uses simple harmoni
c language\, and an improviser is welcome to fill the space as they see fi
t. Matt&rsquo\;s creative work involves recording structured improvisation
and building textures around it using a digital audio workstation. This w
orkflow resulted in his debut album\, Amends.
\n
Participants ages 13
-up are welcome\, and at least two years of instrument or experience in sc
hool ensembles or private lessons are recommended.
\nhttps://faylib.lib
