action-packed reality aboard a St. John&rsquo\;s Queens Hospital ambulance
\, where \;Mike Scardino spent time between semesters as a pre-med stu
dent at Vanderbilt University. His experiences as a first responder amount
to a \;personal journey that intersects many subjects: the end of dre
ams\, human suffering\, Woodstock\, maggots\, isolation\, a plane crash at
JFK\, cops and firemen\, the streets of New York\, eating\, nearly gettin
g murdered\, ugliness\, beauty\, racism\, the war in Vietnam\, the SDS\, t
rue love\, despair\, and hope.
Mike is a native of Elmhurst\, Q
ueens. His father was a first-generation Italian Catholic\, also from Elmh
urst. His mother was a DAR southern Baptist\, from Nashville. One grandmot
her cooked a great deal of grits. The other\, quantities of calamari. Mike
spent a lot of time in the south but mainly in the north. He moved to Bay
side (Queens) from Elmhurst\, then to Nashville for 3 years\, then back to
Bayside\, where he attended Bayside High School. He started working at 13
in his father&rsquo\;s gas station in Elmhurst.
