\nWith war\, we have sought to remember those who gave all\, and to commemorate them. By having a sacred place to visit\, it makes that place a shrine for pilgrims to pay tribute to the sacrifices made.
\nAmericans have always comm emorated their war dead\, and those who made great sacrifices in the servi ce to the United States of America.
\nSacrifice\, suffering\, and gr ief are synonymous with war. A nation of families\, friends\, and citizens \, mourning the loss of their loved ones\, need closure in order to start their grieving process. They need a place that represents this loss and ce lebrates the sacrifice that protects the liberties of free nations. Specia l days were dedicated to paying tribute to those who served since the earl iest days of U.S. history. Yet\, at the beginning of the 20th century\, th ere remained no singular place for Americans to visit in order to pay trib ute to those who gave all. Considering the number of sacrifices made throu ghout U.S. history\, it seemed natural when the U.S. Congress enacted legi slation following World War I to dedicate such a place.
\nThe Tomb o f the Unknown Soldier was established in 1921. The Unknown Soldiers laid t o rest at the Tomb represent all missing and unknown service members who m ade the ultimate sacrifice &ndash\; they not only gave their lives\, but a lso their identities to protect these freedoms.
\nThe Tomb is the fi nal resting place for Unknowns from World War I\, World War II\, and the K orean War\, and is guarded at all times.
\nThe Society of the Honor Guard\, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (www.tombguard.org) is pleased to anno unce that former Assistant Relief Commander\, Kevin Donovan (1981-82) will be speaking about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier\, and the Sentinels who stand the eternal vigil.
