In this illust rated program\, historian and retired National Park Service Ranger\, John Martini will tell the details of the escape\, which has been immortalized in Hollywood movies and innumerable documentaries. The program will also c over the early histories of Alcatraz when it served as a U.S. Army fort\, a lighthouse station\, and military prison\, and after the penitentiary cl osed\, the landmark political action when &ldquo\;Indians of All Tribes&rd quo\; seized the island for eighteen months.
\nPresenter: John A. Ma rtini is a native San Franciscan and a life-long researcher into the histo ry of California and the American West. He worked as a National Park Range r for more than twenty-five years at parks around the country including Fo rt Point National Historic Site\, Alcatraz Island\, the National Maritime Museum\, the USS Arizona Memorial\, the Presidio of San Francisco\, and Te ddy Roosevelt's estate at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. \;For many years John was stationed at the Marin Headlands District of the Golde n Gate National Recreation Area as a Supervisory Park Ranger for Interpret ation and Education. He completed his long career with the National Park S ervice at the Presidio of San Francisco where he served as Curator of Mili tary History. He now works as an independent historian / consultant specia lizing in historical research\, interpretation and preserving of cultural resources.
