\n\nOne hundred years ago\, in 1922\, Sylvia Beach published James Joyce's banned masterpiece\, "Ulysses." Over the next decade\, she kept the book in print through eleven printings\, while battling customs officials\, pirates\, a nd even Joyce himself. \;
\nThis lecture tells the story of Bea ch's work as a publisher\, and how she balanced her relationship with Joyc e with her duties at Shakespeare and Company\, her bookshop and lending li brary. \;
\nThe lecture also surveys Beach's vast archive of le tters and business records at Princeton University. \;
\nPresent er: Pr. Joshua Kotin\, is the \;associate professor in the Department of English at Princeton University\, and the director of the \;Shakesp eare and Company Project. His research and teaching focus on American lite rature\, modernism\, and poetry and poetics. He received his BA from McGil l University in 2002 and his PhD from the University of Chicago in 2011. F rom 2005 to 2008\, he was editor of "Chicago Review."
