Beyond Visibility: Queer Art and A ctivism considers the relationship between art and social change through the lens of queer history. Offering an expanded consideration of q ueer art and activism\, the talk will explore resistance across a wide ran ge of contexts. How can we begin to think beyond linear narratives of &ldq uo\;progress&rdquo\; and re-situate politics at the heart of queer artisti c practice? Drawing upon historical and contemporary figures\, Adam Barbu will illustrate how artists imagine alternative futures by interrogating t he relationship between visibility and assimilation.
\nAdam Barbu is a writer\, curator\, and educator based in Ottawa. They hold an M.A. in Art History from the University of Toronto and are a recip ient of the Middlebook Prize for Young Canadian Curators. In 2019\, they p articipated in Vtape&rsquo\;s \;The Researcher is Present \;reside ncy program\, which resulted in the presentation of the group exhibition&n bsp\;Empty History. They have lectured on topics in art history and queer theory at universities\, research institutions\, and museums locally\, nat ionally\, and internationally.
