\nA storyteller\ , a teacher\, and a writer\, Solveig Eggerz has told folk and fairy tales in Alexandria\, VA\, schools\, in DC&rsquo\;s homeless shelters\, and in N orthern Virginia&rsquo\;s detention centers.
\nHer writing students have ranged from firefighters at Reagan National Airport to Central Intell igence Agency staff\, to civilian and military personnel at the Department of Defense. Currently she teaches personal stories and memoir at the Writ er&rsquo\;s Center in Bethesda\, MD and in Northern Virginia jails.
\n< p>She has written for newspapers such as \;Roll Call\, Alexandria Gaze tte-Packet\, \;and \;The Washington Daily News. \;Her essays a nd stories have appeared in \;The Delmarva Review\, Palo Alto Review\, \;The Christian Century\, Midstream: A Monthly Jewish Review\, \; and The \;Northern Virginia Review. \;\nHaving grown up in four countries\, she speaks three languages and struggles with Italian. In attaining her PhD from Catholic University in Comparative Literature\, sh e focused on medieval anti-feminist satire.
\nSigga of Reykjavik is the story of a spirited young woman who flees the abusive conditions on an Icelandic farm\, only to face grinding poverty in Depression-era Reykjavi k. Her struggle for independence runs parallel to Iceland's quest for free dom from Danish dominance. Born a century before the Me-Too movement\, Sig ga supports her family\, working among men who learn never to touch Sigga without her permission.
\nAn adventurous spirit\, Sigga is thrilled when World War II brings Iceland out of centuries of isolation. Thousands of Allied forces occupy the country\, bringing money and work. But moral d ilemmas abound as Sigga seeks to financially exploit the occupation while at the same time protecting her young and beautiful red-headed daughter fr om soldiers. \;
\nThe Burke Book Club meets on \;the third W ednesday of each month from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM. We will be holding this mo nth's discussion on the fourth Wednesday. It is a monthly book discussion group through the Burke Branch Library. \;
