\nP hil Elsworthy's new photo book Through a Changing Landscape - Photographing place and Community in Waterloo Region showcases seventy-five carefully chosen photographs that depict the elements that c ollectively make Waterloo Region's urban landscape different from any othe r Ontario city. Our community features industrial architecture in the hear t of the city\, Pennsylvania-German influences\, and notable Mid-Century M odernist buildings that University of Waterloo Architecture Professor Rick Haldenby calls &ldquo\;the vernacular architecture of Waterloo Region.&rd quo\;
\nSense of place has been defined as our relationship with pla ces in terms of the emotions\, personal experiences\, stories they evoke. Elsworthy's photographs dramatically illustrate how the built form can att ract or repel. He invites us into each of his photographs to experience an d interpret scenes and settings for ourselves. Over the course of the book \, we come to see how community and sense of place are intrinsically and v itally connected.
