With the Civil War battles raging within a few miles of Washington\, D.C.\, with the reminder of the horrors of the war by wounded soldiers arriving daily to be treated in the area hospitals \, Congress and President Lincoln faced awesome responsibilities of managi ng the war. Yet\, in spite of a war and its horrors\, there was business t o be attended to\, that the everyday running the country itself. Lincoln s cholar and historian\, Rutgers University Prof. Jonathan Lurie (ret.)\, of fers one of his classic presentations about one such incident that occurre d between 1861 and 1863\; it involved both Congress and Pres. Lincoln\, an d the court that resulted from it that is STILL part of our federal judici al system\, the Federal Court of Claims. \;
\nAbout the Presenter: \;Jonathan Lurie is a professor-emeritus of Histor y at Rutgers University. He is the author Arming Military Justice: The Ori gins of the U.S. Court of Military Appeals\; The Slaughterhouse Cases: Reg ulation\, Reconstruction\, and the 14th Amendment. \; \;Prof. Laur ie was awarded the Fulbright fellowship to Uppsala University School of La w in Sweden and was invited to lecture at the United States Supreme Court Historical Society. He has appeared at numerous historical societies and k eynote speaker at public events.
