Coretta Scott King\, the widow of Dr. Mart in Luther King\, Jr.\, was herself a civil rights leader and activist. We' ll celebrate the life of Coretta Scott King with storyteller Gwendolyn Lew is. Ms. Lewis will portray Coretta Scott King as she tells stories from th is courageous woman's life.
\n\nGwendolyn Lewis received her B.S. in Library Science from Eastern Michigan University. Later she receiv ed her M.S.L.S. and Ed. S. in Administration from Wayne State University. She worked 38 years in the Detroit Public Schools District as a media spec ialist librarian\, administrator and testing coordinator. Among the awards received by Gwendolyn was the \;Outstanding Administrator and Librari an of the Year Award.
\nHer true belief in family literacy that fami ly and community involvement influences and reflects the quality of a chil d's learning inspired her to write the book\, Plant A Seed Read!! 101 Acti vities To Motivate Youth To Read and host a family literacy radio show.
\nIn 2010 she took on the role of storyteller which goes hand and hand with Plant a Seed ... Read!!. Storytelling encourages practical life and research skills. It develops readers and storywriters and a sense of creat ivity in our youth. The characters she portrays when sharing biographies a re Mary MacLeod Bethune\; Sojourner Truth\; Coretta Scott King and Maya An gelou.
\nHer community service is an aid to all. It includes being s elf-appointed Hazelton Block Club Food Collector for Good Fellows\; a Y.E. S Foundation volunteer\, reading to kindergarten youths\; storyteller at t he Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast in Redford\, Michigan 2012-2014\; 2012 Woman of the Year for the American Business Woman Association\, Star of D etroit Chapter\; Membership in the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and Beta Sigma Phi Fellowship \; a member of Oak Park and Professionally Speakers Toastm asters International. a member of Detroit Story League and Past Secretary of Detroit Association of Black Storytellers where she engages adults as w ell as youth.
\nGwendolyn also does her job of representing Michigan . She has received local and national awards in race-walking through the M ichigan Senior Olympics. She has been selected as its Ambassador for Wayne County. Gwen has also received 2nd and 3rd places in the Ms. Senior Michi gan Pageant\, 2011&\;2012.
\nGwendolyn Lewis is married to Joseph B. Lewis\, administrator at Wayne County Community College. They have one son. She lives by her favorite motto by Adele Schelle\, "If you act like a winner people will treat you like one and give you every opportunity to achieve."
