 n<p>Norma Watkins grew up during the civil rights struggles in Mississippi
 . Her memoir\, <em>The Last Resort</em> (2011)\, won a gold medal for the 
 best book published in the South by an independent press. She also wrote t
 he memoir\, <em>That Woman from Mississippi</em> (2017) and a novel\, <em>
 In Common</em> (2022).</p>\n<p>Watkins has a Ph.D. in English\, an MFA in 
 Creative Writing and serves as Professor Emerita at Miami Dade College\, w
 here she held an endowed chair. She taught creative writing for ten years
