\nThe ima ge of "The Last Supper" is as readily familiar\, Kenneth Clark once wrote\ , as the boot shape of Italy on a map. However\, the history of how this f amous mural came to be painted\, how precisely Leonardo painted it\, and w ho he painted it for\, are much less well-known. This illustrated lecture recounts how Leonardo received the commission (for whose execution he had little experience and even less inclination) from Lodovico Sforza\, the Du ke of Milan\, and how he went about creating his masterpiece through an ex perimental new style. While the mural is burdened with many myths - most o f which have no basis in fact - the true story of its execution is even mo re remarkable and interesting.
\nPresenter and author: Ross King - R oss King is the award-winning author of books on Italian and French art\, history and architecture. Among his books are "Brunelleschi&rsquo\;s Dome" \, "Michelangelo and the Pope&rsquo\;s Ceiling"\, "The Judgment of Paris"\ , "Leonardo and The Last Supper" and his most recent book\, "The Bookselle r of Florence." He is also the co-author with Anja Grebe of "Florence: The Paintings &\; Frescoes\, 1250-1743" (2015)\, the most comprehensive bo ok ever undertaken on the art of Florence. A \;regular participant in the Italian Renaissance seminars at the Aspen Institute\, he has lectured in many American museums\, including at the Art Institute of Chicago\, the Frick Collection\, and the National Gallery. \;
