  OPL&rsquo\;s Community Conversations series\,&nbsp\; join us for a conver
 sation on intellectual freedom with our special guest speaker\, James Turk
 \, Director for the Centre for Free Expression and distinguished visiting 
 scholar at the Toronto Metropolitan University.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Bio: James 
 Turk</p>\n<p>From 1998 to June 2014\, he served as Executive Director of t
 he Canadian Association of University Teachers.</p>\n<p>Prior to joining C
 AUT\, Jim was an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Tor
 onto\, specializing in Canadian Studies\, and Director of the Labour Studi
 es Program at University College. He also has been Executive Assistant to 
 the National President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees\, Directo
 r of Education for the Ontario Federation of Labour\, and Research Directo
 r for the United Electrical\, Radio and Machine Workers of Canada.</p>\n<p
 >Jim has written extensively on academic freedom\, freedom of expression\,
  university governance\, civil liberties\, commercialization of universiti
 es\, and related public policy issues. His most recent book was an edited 
 collection\, Academic Freedom in Conflict: the Struggle over Speech Rights
  in the University&nbsp\;(2014).</p>\n<p>Jim is a member of the Steering C
 ommittee of the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group and is an A
 djunct Research Professor at the Institute of Political Economy at Carleto
 n University.</p>\n<p>James will be joined by other panelist\, Board Chair
 . Regional Councilor for Ward 5 and owner of Film.ca\, Jeff Knoll. Jeff wi
 ll be the moderator for the evening.</p>\n<p>This program is a part of&nbs
