DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual discussion of Xue Xinran's memoir\, "The
  Good Women of China.".\nhttps://alexandria.libnet.info/event/7298919
X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>When Deng Xiaoping's efforts to "open up"
China took root in the late 1980s\, Xinran recognized an invaluable opport
unity. As an employee for the state radio system\, she had long wanted to
help improve the lives of Chinese women. But when she was given clearance
to host a radio call-in show\, she barely anticipated the enthusiasm it wo
uld quickly generate. Operating within the constraints imposed by governme
nt censors\, "Words on the Night Breeze" sparked a tremendous outpouring\,
and the hours of tape on her answering machines were soon filled every ni
ght. Whether angry or muted\, posing questions or simply relating experien
ces\, these anonymous women bore witness to decades of civil strife\, and
of halting attempts at self-understanding in a painfully restrictive socie
ty. In this collection\, by turns heartrending and inspiring\, Xinran brin
gs us the stories that affected her most\, and offers a graphically detail
ed\, altogether unprecedented work of oral history.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>The Div
ersity Book Club is hosted monthly by AAUW Alexandria / Women Building Cro
ss-Cultural Friendships (WBCCF) and co-sponsored by the Alexandria Burke B
ranch Library.</p>\n<p>WBCCF's goal is to give women the opportunity in a
diverse and inclusive group to enrich their own lives through these relati
onships and help amplify the voices of all women in our community. WBCCF&n
bsp\;believes that the opportunity to come together to explore issues of r
ace\, religion\, ethnicity\, etc. through well-chosen books will not only
further our individual learning but also create a setting in which we migh
t ultimately decide on a community undertaking with wider implications.</p
