The Special Collections and Archives Depar tment invite you to the opening of the December exhibition\, &ldquo\;Froze n in Time: Selections from the Love-Thornell Collection of Black American Photographs&rdquo\; at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. The curators of this exhibit will discuss the methods and techniqu es used to preserve\, process and display this collection of treasured ant ique photography. Reception will begin at 2:00pm in Seminar Room 2.
\n< p>The exhibit highlights the Love-Thornell Collection of Black American Ph otographs\, donated by Jacqui Love-Thornell and her husband\, Kwasi Thorne ll to AARLCC Special Collections in November 2021. The collection contains an unprecedented array of early photography--over 1300 images documenting Black American life from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. T he public will view and learn about cabinet cards\, tintypes\, daguerreoty pes\, ambrotypes\, stereotypes\, cartes de visite and postcards celebratin g African Americans and their families from days gone by.\n
About the African American Research Library and Cultural Center \;
The \;Broward County African American Research Library and
Cultural Center \;(AARLCC) \;is located in the Sistrunk community\
, one of the oldest historically Black communities named for one of Fort L
auderdale&rsquo\;s first Black physicians. Opening to the public on Octobe
r 26\, 2002\, AARLCC became the third public library of its kind in the Un
ited States dedicated to the study of Black history and culture. The 60\,0
00 square-foot Center serves as a repository of materials related to the l
ocal\, national\, and international voices of the African diaspora with mo
re than 85\,000 books\, manuscripts\, artifacts\, framed art\, print\, pho
tography\, audiovisual\, and documents held in our Adult Services Section
and Special Collections. The Youth Services Section features a special col
lection of Coretta Scott King Award books and the \;Ashley Bryan Art C
ollection \;from illustrators of African Descent. AARLCC also features
a 5\,000 sq. ft. museum\, a 300-seat state-of-the-art theatre\, and a Com
puter Training Center.
