X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>As part of Esfahani&rsquo\;s ongoing <stro
ng>Cultured Pallets </strong>series\, this drop-in workshop invites the pu
blic to participate in stencilling the stacks of pallets in the lobby at C
ambridge Art Galleries\, Idea Exchange - Queen's Square on Sunday November
27th\, 1:30-4:00 pm. The stencilled design is based on a floral motif ins
pired by one of William Morris&rsquo\; designs entitled &ldquo\;Persian&rd
quo\;. This design is simultaneously specific yet ambiguous: a subtle nod
to Esfahani&rsquo\;s cultural roots contextualized within Morris&rsquo\; i
nfamous and familiar floral designs. The design also connects back to the
textile industry in Cambridge.</p>\n<p>Inspired by Esfahani&rsquo\;s exper
ience of living in both Western (Canadian) and Eastern (Iranian) cultures\
, her work focuses on the concept of cultural translation and uses shippin
g pallets to embody and facilitate the act of cultural translation. These
transient installations emerge from ongoing process of marking shipping pa
llets with various designs and ornamentation and a hashtag. After exhibiti
ng the work\, the pallets return to circulation and can be tracked by enga
ging in correspondence through social media with those who find them.</p>\
n<p>Returning to the etymological roots of translation as &ldquo\;carrying
  or bringing across\,&rdquo\; the <strong>Cultured Pallets </strong>series
explores the concept of cultural translation as the act of &ldquo\;carryi
ng or bringing across&rdquo\; units of culture. In these installations\, t
he decorated pallets metaphorically serve as objects of holding: &ldquo\;b
earers of culture&rdquo\; that continuously circulate across peoples and c
ultures. As a result\, Esfahani&rsquo\;s installation also evokes issues o
 f migration as people\, ultimately\, function as &ldquo\;bearers&rdquo\; a
nd &ldquo\;translators&rdquo\; of culture in our current globalized state.
