DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a virtual discussion of McCreary's 2019 mem

X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Slaying autism stereotypes with stand-up\,
one joke at a time. Like many others on the autism spectrum\, 20-somethin
g stand-up comic Michael McCreary has been told by more than a few well-me
aning folks that he doesn't "look" autistic. But\, as he's quick to point
out in this memoir\, autism "looks" different for just about everyone with
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Diagnosed with ASD at age five\, McCreary
got hit with the performance bug not much later. During a difficult time
in junior high\, he started journaling\, eventually turning his pain into
something empowering--and funny. He scored his first stand-up gig at age 1
4\, and hasn't looked back. An #OwnVoices memoir breaks down what it's lik
e to live with autism for readers on and off the spectrum.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>

e Diversity Book Club is hosted monthly by AAUW Alexandria / Women Buildin
g Cross-Cultural Friendships (WBCCF) and co-sponsored by the Alexandria Bu
rke Branch Library.</p>\n<p>WBCCF's goal is to give women the opportunity
in a diverse and inclusive group to enrich their own lives through these r
elationships and help amplify the voices of all women in our community. WB
CCF&nbsp\;believes that the opportunity to come together to explore issues
of race\, religion\, ethnicity\, etc. through well-chosen books will not
only further our individual learning but also create a setting in which we
might ultimately decide on a community undertaking with wider implication
