X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library an
d Museum's entire collection of decorated Belgian Relief flour sacks from
World War I was subjected to a close examination in June 2022.</p>\n<p>Ann
elien van Kempen\, visiting researcher from The Netherlands\, and Marcus E
ckhardt\, Hoover Presidential Museum curator\, studied every detail and co
unted 360 items in this unique survey of war-time American and Canadian fl
our sacks\, decorated by Belgian schoolgirls\, women and artists\, mainly
in 1915.</p>\n<p>They will present what they discovered in their fascinati
ng two-week search in this episode. They share their insights in both the
great variety and similarity in sacks\, school-projects\, flour residues i
n dresses\, patriotic patterns in the embroidery and needlework and delica
te lace edges.</p>\n<p>They&rsquo\;ll reveal the identity of Belgian schoo
lgirls who painted and embroidered the sacks. Special attention will be gi
ven to paintings of emerging -now famous- Belgian artists and exquisite em
broideries\, including the &ldquo\;Rooster on the Oak Branch&rdquo\; flour
sack from Antwerp that was presented in a manifestation of gratitude to M
 r. Herbert Hoover in August 1916.</p>\n<p>Since June\, new WWI decorated f
lour sacks have come into the museum&rsquo\;s collection\, showing there a
re many more waiting to be discovered!</p>\n<p><strong>Because this presen
tation is coming from The Netherlands\, the time difference dictates that
we run it live at Noon Central Time. We will replay the recording at 6 p.m
. All registrations will work with either time slot.</strong> Registration
is required to get the zoom link.&nbsp\;</p>\nhttps://hiawathapubliclibra
