Aleem Karmali is an independent documentary fi lmmaker and writer from Edmonton. His latest film is Thrown into Canada: T he Settlement of Asian Refugees from Uganda\, which marks the 50th anniver sary of Idi Amin&rsquo\;s expulsion of South Asians from Uganda\, and expl ores the first major movement of non-European refugees to Canada. Through his company Crescent Productions\, Aleem&rsquo\;s films generally explore historical subjects relating to the intersections of diversity\, culture a nd religion\, with a particular focus on the contributions of Muslim cultu res and civilizations to the world\, as well as reflecting on pluralism in Canadian society. \;
