 ie Friedman will guide participants through&nbsp\;her process of identifyi
 ng the best place in the narrative to begin a story. She will share some e
 ffective and memorable openings from bestselling books. Then she will give
  10 writing suggestions for unique ways to start a story to capture the at
 tention of a reader or editor. (Example: Starting a story with an unexpect
 ed statement.)&nbsp\;This&nbsp\;interactive workshop will include a writin
 g exercise for students to choose one of the strategies to write their own
  story opening. At the end\, there will be a question and answer session. 
 Handouts will be emailed to participants.</p>\n<p>LAURIE FRIEDMAN is the a
 uthor of over 200 picture books\, easy readers\, chapter books\, and novel
 s for young readers\, including the award-winning&nbsp\;Mallory McDonald&n
 bsp\;and&nbsp\;Love\, Ruby Valentine&nbsp\;series. Laurie&rsquo\;s books h
 ave been translated into numerous languages and have been chosen for Schol
 astic Book Clubs and Fairs\, and as a Children&rsquo\;s Book of the Month 
 Club Selection.&nbsp\;She has received many awards for her work and speaks
  at schools and literary conferences around the country. Prior to writing 
 books for children\, Laurie worked in advertising.&nbsp\;She is a native A
 rkansan\, and loves to read\, bake\, spend time with her family\, and help
