 ong> won an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in 2014 for <em>The Big Smoke</em>\,
  a marvelous\, nuanced\, polyphonic exploration of the life of boxer Jack 
 Johnson\, the first African-American heavyweight world champion.</p>\n<p>H
 e'll join us to read selections from his work\, and <em><strong>announce t
 he winners of the 88th Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards</strong></em> honoring t
 he 2022 books that excel in confronting racism and exploring human diversi
 ty.</p>\n<p>Previous winners include Zora Neale Hurston\, Langston Hughes\
 , Gunnar Myrdal\, Toni Morrison\, Marilyn Chin\, Sandra Cisneros and the R
 ev. Dr. Martin Luther King.</p>\n<p><strong>Adrian Matejka</strong> is the
  Ruth Lilly Professor of Poetry at Indiana University Bloomington. He is t
 he author of four collections of poems\, including <em>The Big Smoke</em> 
 and <em>Map to the Stars</em>.</p>\n<p>Among Matejka&rsquo\;s other honors
  are fellowships from the Academy of American Poets\, the Guggenheim Found
 ation\, the Lannan Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the 
 Rockefeller Foundation and a Simon Fellowship from United States Artists. 
 His latest collection of poems is <em>Somebody Else Sold the World</em>\, 
 published in July 2021. <strong><em>Last on His Feet</em></strong> is his 
 first graphic novel.</p>\n<p><br /><br /></p>\n<p style="text-align: cente
