 on Proclamation\, and subsequent Reconstruction amendments didn&rsquo\;t j
 ust abolish slavery&mdash\;they gave African Americans a chance to earn a 
 living and own land. For many of these Black pioneers\, this meant risking
  their lives to achieve this American promise of freedom. Author Bernice A
 lexander Bennett sets out to change the narrative about the largely unknow
 n Black homesteaders in the South. In her new book <em>Black Homesteaders 
 of the South</em>\, the descendants of Black Homesteaders of Louisiana sha
 re nineteen stories representing nine parishes: Ascension\, Bossier\, Clai
 borne\, East Baton Rouge\, East Feliciana\, Livingston\, St. Helena\, Wash
 ington\, and West Feliciana.</p>\n<p>During the first program on March 11t
 h\, Bernice will discuss the process of searching for an ancestor's land g
 rant application\, as well as her journey to write this book.&nbsp\;</p>\n
 <p>During the second program on March 18th\, a panel of local contributors
  to <em>Black Homesteaders of the South</em> will discuss their experience
 s with each other and the audience.</p>\n<p>Bernice Alexander Bennett is a
 n award-winning author\, genealogist\, nationally recognized guest speaker
 \, storyteller\, and producer-host of the popular "Research at the Nationa
 l Archives and Beyond" BlogTalkRadio program. She is also the first recipi
 ent of the Ida B. Wells Service Award\, given by the Sons and Daughters of
  the United States Middle Passage\, for her dedication to broadcast storie
 s about enslaved and indentured ancestors of African descent. She also rec
 eived the Elizabeth Clark-Lewis Afro-American Historical and Genealogical 
 Society (AAHGS) Genealogy Award in 2019 for original research in support o
 f African American genealogy. Bennett is a volunteer with the Homestead Na
 tional Historical Park Service and has devoted her grass-roots skills to i
 dentifying and encouraging descendants of Black homesteaders to share thei
