sented in partnership with Canadian Caribbean Association of HaltonThis family-friendly workshop\, led by ill ustrator and author Janine Carrington\, is an exploration of beauty\, resi lience\, and resistance through the Trinidad and Tobago &ldquo\;Carnival&r dquo\; that also occurs in February.
\nHear about the journey of Afr ican slaves to the Caribbean and how they incorporated their African cultu res into the existing Lent festivities as a way of coping with hardship wh ile they gained their freedom. Participants create a craft together to cel ebrate &ldquo\;Carnival\,&rdquo\; followed by a reading of Janine&rsquo\;s new book &ldquo\;Em and the Cat.&rdquo\; Activities are geared towards ag es 7-8 years. Families of all ages and cultures are welcome!
\nJanine Carrington is a Canadian illustra tor and author that specializes in BIPOC-centred\, Black-affirming childre n's books and comics. She was born in Toronto\, Ontario and taught the bas ics of drawing by her father. She went on to study art in high school and at the Ontario College of Art and Design. After completing her last year o f college in Florence\, Italy\, she took time to travel the world before s ettling in Toronto again. She has been working professionally since 2008\, and her work has been published in Canada's most highly respected childre n's magazine. She is currently inspired by her wonderful son to create art that uplifts children\, especially those of colour.
