This class is presented by the Birmingham Calligraphy Guild\, and sponsored by the Hoover Public Library. Registrati on and supplies for your first class are free. The BCG and HPL ask that yo u join the Guild for subsequent classes to allow more patrons the opportun ity to attend.
\nProfessional calligrapher Louise Meredith presents an introduction to the lower- and upper-case Foundational Hand. \; Edw ard Johnston developed this script in the late 1890s from his study of 10t h century manuscripts in the British Museum. \; He taught the first mo dern day calligraphy class at the Central School in London in 1899. \; Foundation is the basic Roman hand that is excellent for teaching letteri ng to beginners. \; Foundational hand is used for clarity\, proportion and simplicity. \; Having learned this script as her first broad-pen lettering\, Louise has become an accomplished professional calligrapher an d teacher. \; She continues to teach and produce beautiful work. \ ; The Guild will have pens\, inks and papers for you to try.

\nOur membership consists of a v ery diverse group of calligraphers\, from the hobbyist to the full-time pr ofessional and every level of interest in between. We come from Alabama\, Tennessee\, Florida\, Georgia\, Mississippi\, and Kentucky and many of our members travel to Birmingham to participate in the numerous learning oppo rtunities hosted by the guild.
