X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>It is one thing to view the Antarctic from
a plane or a ship\, but an entirely different experience to be dropped of
f on the continent&rsquo\;s ice shelf for a lengthy stay. During the first
to attempt to traverse the continent\, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his Endu
rance crew braved an agonizing trip only to be rebuffed by the sea\, ice\,
and weather. In contrast\, commercial firms now advertise pleasure trips
to the continent. Scientist Kathleen Reedy made seven trips there\, spendi
ng a total of ten months on her research of human adaptation to cold clima
te\, working at America&rsquo\;s McMurdo and South Pole research stations.
