X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Join fiddler and scholar Howard Marshall f
or a live demonstration of Missouri fiddling and a discussion of the histo
ry and people behind the music.</p>\n<p>Making music informally is a satis
fying\, simple pleasure of everyday life. And the fiddle or violin is an i
nstrument many have picked up and learned to play by ear in informal setti
ngs. Musical traditions involving the fiddle are widespread around the wor
ld\, but in our region\, the fiddle is often heard at traditional dances\,
front-porch jam sessions and in bluegrass music. Many Missouri fiddlers c
hose to "keep it old-time\," carrying on the inherited tunes and styles of
former times\, but as with most musicians\, Missouri fiddlers have learne
d from many sources and ventured into many styles.</p>\n<p>Howard Marshall
is professor emeritus and former chair of art history and archaeology and
former director of the Missouri Cultural Heritage Center at the Universit
y of Missouri\, Columbia. He will be accompanied by longtime friends Heinr
ich Leonhard (guitar)\, Jim Ruth (banjo)\, Kathy Gordon (bass) and special
guests bluegrass mandolinist Art Logan.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>His latest book\,
"Keep It Old-Time: Fiddle Music in Missouri From the 1960s Folk Music Revi
val to the Present" (with a companion CD of 36 fiddlers) from the Universi
ty of Missouri Press\, will be available for purchase at the program.&nbsp
