Award-winning author\, Shonda Buchanan\, will be discussing her memoir\, Black Indian\, which has been described as The Joy Luck Club and The Color Purple meets Leslie Marmon Silko&rsquo\;s Cere mony. Unlike these other great works\, Black Indian is an inspiring work o f non-fiction that explores her family&rsquo\;s legacy of being African Am ericans with American Indian roots and how they dealt with not only societ y&rsquo\;s ostracization but also the consequences of this dual inheritanc e.
\nPushcart Prize nominee\, Oxfam Ambassador\, USC Los Angeles Ins titute for the Humanities Fellow and City of Los Angeles (COLA) Department of Cultural Affairs Master Artist Fellow\, Shonda is the author of five b ooks\, including Black Indian. Shonda is also the newest fiction faculty m ember in Alma College&rsquo\;s MFA Program. Descendant of African nations\ , Coharie\, Choctaw and Eastern Band Cherokee and Europeans\, Shonda lives and writes in Los Angeles on Tongva and Chumash lands.
