  memoir\, <em>Ducks</em>\, has converted many skeptics to the genre\, and 
 is one of BPL's most sought after graphics. She wrote the memoir after mov
 ing to the oil sands and encountering the harsh culture shock of being a w
 oman among thousands of men. In <em>Ducks</em>\, Beaton&rsquo\;s natural c
 artooning prowess is on full display as she draws colossal machinery and m
 ammoth vehicles set against a sublime Albertan backdrop of wildlife\, Nort
 hern Lights\, and Rocky Mountains.<em>&nbsp\;</em></p>\n<p>In this live\, 
 virtual event\, she'll share her personal journey from writing web comics 
 in rural Alberta to topping dozens of bestseller lists.</p>\n<p>This event
  is presented by BPL's new digital resource\, <a href="https://libraryc.or

 ns with top authors from around the world.&nbsp\;</p>\n<h5>About the Autho
 r</h5>\n<p>Kate Beaton was born and raised in Cape Breton\, Nova Scotia\, 
 Canada. After graduating from Mount Allison University with a double degre
 e in History and Anthropology\, she moved to Alberta in search of work tha
 t would allow her to pay down her student loans. During the years she spen
 t out West\, Beaton began creating webcomics under the name&nbsp\;<em>Hark
 ! A Vagrant</em>\, quickly drawing a substantial following around the worl
 d. The collections of her landmark strip&nbsp\;<em>Hark! A Vagrant</em>&nb
 sp\;and&nbsp\;<em>Step Aside\, Pops</em>&nbsp\;each spent several months o
 n the&nbsp\;New York Times&nbsp\;graphic novel bestseller list\, as well a
 s appearing on best of the year lists from&nbsp\;<em>Time</em>\,&nbsp\;<em
 >The Washington Post</em>\,&nbsp\;<em>Vulture</em>\,&nbsp\;<em>NPR Books</
 em>\, and winning the Eisner\, Ignatz\, Harvey\, and Doug Wright Awards. S
 he has also published the picture books&nbsp\;King Baby&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;<e
 m>The Princess and the Pony</em>. Beaton lives in Cape Breton with her fam
