Ruth Schachter: Tapestry Weaver
\nAr tist Statement
\nI have been involved in the craft/art world for muc h of my life. When I moved to Florida from Philadelphia several years ago\ , I moved down here with an unused tapestry loom that I picked up at an au ction for $1. I found a terrific online teacher and started my tapestry jo urney. When the world unexpectedly shut down soon after\, I started weavin g all the time and have kept weaving. Thanks to the internet\, I&rsquo\;ve found an international community of wonderful weavers and generous teache rs. Thanks to the Broward Art Guild and Art Around Town\, I have this oppo rtunity to exhibit my work.
\nTapestry weaving is a combination of d esign\, materials\, and patience. The cloth is built up on a loom\, by han d\, starting at the bottom\, adding new threads (the weft) with every colo r change. Within the framework of warp and weft which create a simple grid \, the possibilities in design are endless. There are always new technique s and fibers to try. I&rsquo\;ve recently begun to experiment with botanic al dyes\, using plants from my own garden to dye wool yarn. I get much of my visual inspiration from Florida&rsquo\;s flora and fauna\, which are st ill relatively new to me.
\nContemporary tapestry weaving is fascina ting\, and every artist approaches it in a different way. Unlike historica l tapestries which were woven on a very large scale\, for massive spaces\, like in your local castle\, most contemporary weaving is not\, which is p erfect for today&rsquo\;s homes.
