Over the course of the twentieth century\, drag performance in the United States developed from something of a novel ty act into an independent and impactful performance genre that permeated American culture. Take a virtual look at the history of drag performance i n the United States through photographs\, ephemera\, and a variety of othe r archival materials held by Houghton Library at Harvard University.

Dr. Wittmann received his Ph.D. from the \;Program in American Cult ure \;at the University of Michigan. His scholarly work has focused on the cultural\, material\, and transnational history of the nineteenth-cen tury United States and on the dynamics of popular entertainment in particu lar.
