\nFebru ary is Black History Month. \;
\nAfter being marginaliz ed and ignored for so long\, they demanded greater representation of their work in museums\, as well as the inclusion of African American scholars a nd curators in the ranks of museum professionals. Join us as we celebrate the rich contributions these pioneers made to American culture and see som e of the work that continues to astonish art lovers today.
\nPresent er: Janet Mandel taught in New Jersey&rsquo\;s public schools for thirty t wo years\, the last eighteen of which were at Columbia High School in Mapl ewood\, where she taught English\, art history\, and World Languages and C ultures. In October of 2003\, she was named runner-up for the New Jersey C ouncil for the Humanities (NJCH) Teacher the Year award\, and was formally recognized by the New Jersey State Legislature and Governor Codey for thi s achievement. In May of 2004\, she was the recipient of the &ldquo\;Innov ations in Special Education Award&rdquo\; from the New Jersey School Board s Association (NJSBA) and the Association of Schools and Agencies for the Handicapped (ASAH). Pre-COVID\, Janet presented illustrated talks on a var iety of art history topics in-person\; now she is busier than ever present ing virtually for adult schools\, libraries\, museums\, senior centers\, c ommunity centers\, and similar venues. \;
