About the Film Collectio n

The MDPLS 16mm film collection dates back to 1956 and w as developed to be a teaching collection designed to be utilized for publi c programming. Its holdings include acclaimed feature films such as Rashom on\, Alphaville\, Joan of Arc\, Pandora&rsquo\;s Box\, and 2001: A Space O dyssey. However\, what makes this collection special is the wide array of short films\, ranging from experimental by notable artists such as Len Lye \, Luis Bunel\, Homer Groening\, Kenneth Anger\, Sergei Eisenstein\, &\ ; John Whitney to the educational produced by the likes of Pyramid Films\, Xerox\, McGraw Hill\, and National Film Board of Canada. The emphasis of the collection has been placed on films of general educational and artisti c value for adults\, and on those films that offer a creative experience f or children. Unique to the collection are Florida specific titles like Enc hanted\, Metropolis in the Sun\, Florida Everglades\, A Hurricane Named Be tsy\, Miccosukee Indian Friends\, Salesman\, Calling Miami Home\, Florida& rsquo\;s Turnpike\, Last Night at the S&\;S\, Just Co-incidence\, and m ore.

About the Division of Special Collections &\; Arch ives

Miami-Dade Public Library System&rsquo\;s Division o f Special Collections &\; Archives holds rare and irreplaceable histori cal documents for the benefit of the public and scholarly community. They oversee the Helen Muir Florida Collection\, 16mm Film Collection\, Cuban C ollection of Rare Books &\; Ephemera\, genealogy\, Vasari Project\, and rare &\; antiquarian books from as early as the 17th century. The Divi sion's primary goal is to provide the public with the contents of the vaul t at their request. Its collections include rare books\, original manuscri pts\, over 18\,000 photographs\, prints\, artifacts\, audiovisual resource s\, and electronic media.
